The Southeast team advanced to the Florida finals in the National Land Judging Contest. Adam Shealy, Christine Hejnal, Nadia Hunt, and Kyle Vetter, traveled to Levy County to participate in the State contest on March 31. They practiced with Land Judging guru Mr. Lynn and the Charlotte County Senior FFA team for the two days prior to the contest.  Senior Nadia Hunt placed 2nd  in the State and sophomore Adam Shealy placed fourth.   “I’ve never seen a team that could work with each other so well,” said Steve Harber, a former coach and competitor for land judging teams at Southeast.  Reaching the National Level in any event has been a lofty goal for all Southeast High FFA teams. The team will be leaving for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on April 29th, and will compete on May 4th. On the way to Oklahoma the team will be practicing everything from judging the slope of the land to knowing how to tell the best use for different types of landscapes.  The team is looking forward to pioneering national competitions for the Southeast FFA.

Three Prince Edward 4-H members will represent Virginia in the National 4-H Land Appreciation Contest in Oklahoma City in May.  Here Katie Pelland, Susan Pin, and Ben Jones are shown working with Extension Agent David Smith on texturing various types of soils.  In Oklahoma, teams will evaluate land characteristics such as topsoil, subsoil, and plant life.  They are also required to recommend treatments to improve the land’s adaptability for certain purposes such as producing crops, raising cattle, or building homes.  The Prince Edward team earned the opportunity to participate through their outstanding performance in the 2005 Envirothon program.

Mississippi Senior State Land Judging Team

Meagan Scott, 4-H Agent, Micah Schneider, Alan Smith, Stephen Ladner, and Lacey Odom

Thirteen Pearl River County 4-H’ers recently participated in the State Land Judging Contest held in Philadelphia, MS.  Despite the rainy weather, all three teams brought home top awards.  The senior team placed first and the two junior teams took first and second places.  The senior team had a team score of 742 out of a possible 900 points.  The senior team will be representing Mississippi in the National Land Judging Contest, which will take place in Oklahoma City, OK, May 2-4, 2006.

Members of the Pearl River County junior and senior teams were also recognized as the top overall scorers in the contest.  Lacey Odom was the top scoring senior and Alan Smith was the second high scoring senior, while Micah Schneider was third.  Eric Bordelon, D.J. Failla, and Jessica Smith were recognized as the first, second, and third high scoring juniors.

Senior team members include:  Lacey Odom, Stephen Ladner, Alan Smith, and Micah Schneider.  Junior team members include:  Natalie McCormick, Lauren McCormick, Emily Bordelon, Jessica Smith, D.J. Failla, Eric Bordelon, Erin Seal, Belle Failla, and Madelaine Colarossi.

Coached by Area Agronomy Agent, Mike Howell, the teams began practicing in January and practiced weekly until the contest.  The contest is designed to train youth to determine the proper crop to produce on each soil type.  4-H’ers learn treatments needed to maintain the highest production on a particular soil.  Youth also learn several factors influencing the site limitations for use as a home site.

The Louisiana School of the Agricultural Sciences (LaSAS) has been very busy this FFA year.  The start of the year, found the students competing in the 44th annual State FFA Soil Judging Career Development Event on November 10, 2005. The contest was held at Louisiana State University in Alexandria and hosted 54 teams from around the state vying for the title of Louisiana State Soil Champions and the right to represent Louisiana at the National Soil Judging Competition. Through hard work and determination the LaSAS Soil teams placed 1st and 12th out of 54 teams that were competing.  The first place team will compete on the National level which will be held May 2, 2006 in Oklahoma City, OK. The Soil team would like to take the time to thank the Bayhills Golf Course for allowing us to practice at their wonderful site.
